"Yeah," Kate says, dragging the word out as she winces a little, looking over at Carla Jean. "It was awhile ago, back in the summer, and we were hanging out and... I don't know, it was stupid. We made out a little and then he freaked out and took off and it took me like, a month and a half to get him to even look at me again."

She's still not entirely sure why he freaked out since she's been too afraid to ask. "I guess he freaked out because we're friends? Like, it was too weird for him, which is fine, I get it. It was super dumb and I shouldn't have done it."
