"Well, someone told me, first," Carla Jean says, mouth pulling to one side. The truth of it is, she's grateful for having run into Sean, that she could find out from a person instead of something as impersonal as this, or having someone mention it in passing without knowing that she was unaware, but at a time like this, it's difficult to let that show. This isn't exactly a silver lining kind of situation. "I just wanted to see how much I could find out about it. Not exactly light readin' material."

Peeta couldn't tell if it was better or worse. After a long moment he decided that it was better that she learned from someone else before reading about it in the paper. That wasn't the sort of news that should be delivered solely by the printed word. It would be too heartless.

"Yeah I can imagine." He nodded, shifting in his seat. "Probably about as far from light reading as you can get and still have it be personal."

"Probably," Carla Jean says dryly, nodding in agreement. It's the sort of thing that speaks for itself, really, but she hadn't expected anyone to interrupt and he seems to be trying, which from a stranger means a lot. As far as she can tell, it's genuine, too, and that's at least better than the sheriff and all of his sorrys, as if there were any chance of that making a difference. "Sort of thing that shouldn't even be possible."
